Explaining to all companies that the three requirements for me to use a social media with any frequency are:

  • A chronological follow-only feed, ideally which I can set as default
  • Anonymity (my real name and face are not required)
  • Have a desktop version

You may call me boomer or whatever but if a social media doesn’t have bare minimum these three things then I will never use it ever. I won’t even make an account. You can suck at everything else but these are non-negotiable. The fact that they are anathema to profitability does not matter to me. If you cannot provide me these three things then I will simply not use any social media at all.

I’d add that it has to work if I:

* Increase font sizes.

* Switch fonts.

* Block animation.

* Block non-scrolling elements.

Because I need to be able to do these things. The 1st 2 to read, the last 2, to avoid migraines from animation and/or standard web design.

If we’re talking about nuclear justice, please don’t forget the Marshall Islands.

Many people have already pointed out how the Oppenheimer film glosses over the effects of nuclear testing on Indigenous communities in the United States, and it’s undeniable that more people need to know about this. More attention also needs to be paid to the Marshall Islands, where the legacy of US nuclear testing still affects the Marshallese people to this day. Most Americans don’t even know where the Marshall Islands is—let alone what the US government did there during the Cold War.

Between 1946 and 1958, the United States detonated 67 nuclear weapons on the Marshall Islands, which was then a US trust territory. The tests yielded the same level of radiation as 7,000 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs, or 1.6 Hiroshima bombs every day for 12 years. The US government didn’t even evacuate some islanders from close proximity to the testing grounds. The fallout—which spread across the islands and beyond—caused deaths, miscarriages, stillbirths, radiation sickness, cancer, and many other health problems, with high cancer rates persisting to this day. Whole islands remain uninhabitable, and generations have been displaced.

It gets even worse. The US government knew that certain islands were too dangerous for human habitation and resettled the Marshallese there anyway; then US scientists studied the effects of radiation on them without their knowledge or consent in a secret program called Project 4.1. The US government secretly brought radioactive waste from Nevada and buried it in a concrete dome on Enewetak Atoll that is now vulnerable to erosion from the rising seas. And the US military also used the Marshall Islands for at least a dozen biological weapons tests. The US government did all of this to the Marshall Islands while it was a trust territory under US protection.

But in the decades since nuclear testing ended—even since the Marshall Islands’ independence in 1986—it has never received full compensation from the United States. Never.

There is a lot more that everyone should know about this history, and I recommend starting here to learn more:

Can anyone suggest a readable font with more weight?

I’ve been using Andika, but it looks a bit thin/faint on Linux Mint. And way too thin on Firefox in Linux Mint. There’s an accessibility setting to increase font size, but not font weight.

I’d like something bolder and easier to see.

I need something which supports the Roman alphabet, Cyrillic alphabet, and ideally also the Wulfilan alphabet, and the Futhark. So far I have been using Andika for 2 and Skeirs for the other 2. I remember a lot of trouble with Opendyslexic because it only supported 1 of these.

I’m light-sensitive and have a hard time finding monitors I can use. My current one is 1080p. I’m not going to be able to use font rendering which only works for 4k.

So I think the best strat here is for the users who did get the new layout to just stop using the desktop version of the site for a while, like a week or a month or however long their ‘experiment’ is supposed to last, while the users who didn’t get the new layout should keep using the desktop version like normal or, perhaps, use it even more than usual.

My guess is that they’re doing basic A/B testing on the new layout to see if it would boost engagement: the userbase is split roughly 50/50 between the 2 versions and they are going to be comparing the engagement data between the 2 groups of users to see if it’s worth it switching everyone to the new layout or not.

Basically, if you got the new layout and don’t like it - don’t use it. If engagement metrics of group B (new layout) are lower than those of group A (no change), the experiment will be considered a failure and they will have to reverse the change.

If your tumblr suddenly looks like twitter - it’s a sign to log off and go touch some grass! (or just use the mobile app since that engagement data isn’t relevant to this particular experiment)

Don’t just not use it, send feedback too!

There’s a “contact us” option to send feedback about features being launched. GIVE FEEDBACK IN THE APPROPRIATE SPACE!

Not to “As a professional UX researcher” on this thread, but yeah, as a professional UX researcher, now is the exact time to provide clear (but kind!! the poor UX team is usually not responsible for these decisions) feedback on what your thoughts are in regards to this change.

In my job, if I were doing an AB test on a site layout and every person I interviewed said “I hate it, it looks like knockoff twitter, please put the old one back” then I would be very excited to include a nice little bullet point in my report that says “[x] number of participants disliked the new layout :)”

If Tumblr switches to now-standard web design with scrolling content alongside non-scrolling sadobars, that hurts and triggers migraines…

I’m fascinated by how the formatting of different social media sites affect how text is read.

For instance, a line break on Tumblr indicates a new idea.

But a reblog break indicates that time has passed.

Incredibly disappointing behavior made all the more cynical by it happening just after Pride Month

Here are some LGBTQ+ helplines to call instead of the Trevor project in the wake of this:

Help is still out there!

[Text ID: A collection of four infographics from the ‘Friends of Trevor United’ (@/FriendsOfTrevor) from twitter. The first infographic reads as follows: “The trevor project just announced mass layoffs effective immediately… While our union was in an active bargaining session. Here are the facts” The next three slides give context to the layoffs, and are all titled with 'The Trevor Project is Union Busting’. They read as follows: “At 9:15 am pst, as many of our members and overnight staff were still sleeping, The Trevor Project announced layoffs effective immediately… while our union representatives were in an active bargaining session regarding the terms of these layoffs. Trevor lawyers threatened to proceed with layoffs and withhold severance in order to pressure our representatives into accepting a lesser package. This is bad-faith bargaining and blatant union busting. Our union made every attempt to bargain in good faith. We gave Trevor leadership an opportunity to demonstrate care, compassion, and basic decency in this process, and they refused.” /End ID]

Hey since the WGA labor strike is mirroring the same kind of strikes that happened about a century ago

Listen to me.

Listen to me.

Be extremely skeptical of what big news media outlets say about the strikes.

Because those same labor strikes were also demonized by the media. You can find newspaper clippings of strikers being called dangerous and violent, for doing any manner of things like murder and arson, and for being made of the current undesirables of the country at the time.

I’m not kidding they demonized those labor strikes by saying they were made of lazy violent immigrants.

Be extremely wary of any news articles about this strike as most large media is owned by rich people. They are going to demonize the strikers to try and break it up faster, because if the public stops supporting them, the rich people will have more leverage against them.

And people at these strikes need to be wary of random people joining wearing suspicious clothing who come to start making people violent or to harass people.

The same tactic is used by cops to agitate crowds so the other cops can move in with “justification”

Watch each other’s backs.

It’s really funny that redditors convinced themselves that the stupid Tiananmen Square copypasta is going to get chinese people forcefully disconnected from their internet service or something while the UK government will get your ass if you complete the sentence “Soldier F is ___” and has actively worked with google and with social media websites to censor posts or search results about Soldier F

Like 90% of the shit people make up about China is actually true for the UK
